Inquisition
A strange rumor spread across the battlefield.
“A man calling himself Jesus has appeared on the front.”
Some soldiers trembled in fear, others saw salvation, and still others mocked the idea.
I detained the man on suspicion of being a spy and began the interrogation.
It is true that they may be false prophets, yet one among them might still be a savior.
And even if they were to reveal some miracle, what would it truly change?
Would it not only further complicate the situation?
If they themselves were to step onto the battlefield, what would become of the authority of the Church or the state?
Do they wish to be treated as spies?
The Three Wise Men of the East are no more.
Could they not remain instead within the icons of the Orthodox Church of that opposing nation?
They give no answer.
